Extending a red brick home: modern living, original character
Sydney is full of solid red brick homes. They're well built, often on great blocks, and full of character. But they were designed for a different way of living. A well-designed extension can give you the best of both.
Respect the original, don't copy it
The best extensions don't try to imitate old brickwork. A clearly modern addition, set against the original home, often looks better than a near match that never quite lines up.
Open up to the garden
Older homes often turn their back on the yard. An extension is the chance to put kitchen, living and dining where the light and garden are.
Check what's behind the walls
Older homes can hide tired wiring, old plumbing and, in some cases, asbestos. A good builder will investigate early so there are no surprises mid-build.
Join old and new properly
The junction between existing and new is where leaks and cracks happen if it's done badly. Footings, waterproofing and flashing need real attention here.
A recent example
Our Beecroft project added a modern extension to an existing red brick house, designed by Giles Tribe Architects and built by Sharpe Build.
